The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after recent developments came to light.

This included attempting to break his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on social media on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the possibility of his transfer to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.

The legal document highlights that the United States embassy in the capital, the capital city, is situated around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist American leader Donald Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will experience a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he needed ongoing care for lung conditions and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. His successor was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, many Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, Brasília.

The security forces stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the period, the legal team called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
