Thunder Kick Off Title Defense with Thrilling Overtime Victory
The Thunder star joined the Thunder back in 2019.
The Thunder's star player scored the decisive points deep into double overtime as the defending champions opened their NBA title defense with a 125-124 win over the visiting Rockets.
Last season's MVP poured in 35 points, featuring two from the free-throw line with just 2.3 seconds left in double OT, giving the champions a positive start.
The Rockets' big man led all scorers with a game-high 39 and also connected on a career-high five shots from beyond the arc.
But Chet Holmgren, who contributed 28 points of his own, was instrumental alongside match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.
"Grit and defence," SGA commented of their performance. "We know that when we execute on defence we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—shots, missed attempts, fortune or bad luck. We did sufficient defensive work to get the win. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a positive beginning."
Prior to the game, Oklahoma's title banner was unveiled at their home court, while the squad were presented with their title rings.
Oklahoma City defeated the Pacers in the previous season's championship series. It was their maiden championship since the franchise moved in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 title.
The Pacers will have the chance to secure some payback on Friday when they face the Thunder, while the Rockets return to action on the identical day at the Pistons.
Elsewhere, a massive effort of 43 points, 12 boards and nine dimes from Luka Doncic was not enough to stop his new team the Lakers from suffering a 119-109 loss against the Golden State Warriors.
Jimmy Butler picked up 31 points and Stephen Curry added 23 points for the road team.
The Lakers were missing the NBA's all-time leading scorer James as he recovers from sciatica.
