At least 11 of the meteorological balloons, carrying 18,000 packs of illegal cigarettes, have now been retrieved

Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.

Air Travel Interruptions

The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.

Border Security Response

Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.

Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."

To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.

Neighboring Country Impact

At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.

Criminal Methodology

Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."

Law Enforcement Objectives

Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."

European Tensions

These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.

Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
